Further to my facetious reference to Jesuits in my last post (not all of them of course were perfectly trained), I am reminded of a joke that used to go the rounds when I was at school:
A Dominican, a Benedictine and a Jesuit wished to resolve which of their three Orders was most precious in the eyes of God. Each of them was convinced that God preferred their own order but had no tangible way of knowing this for sure. In the end, they decided to pray to God and ask Him for a sign. For a long time there was no answer, and then one day when the three of them were gathered together, a note floated down the chimney and into the fireplace. It went as follows:
Dearly beloved,
You are indeed foolish to ask such a question. Do you not know that I have no favourites? Your are all equal in My eyes. Now go in peace and waste no more time in such idle speculation.
God SJ
